Friday October 18 “WSRR Tracks to Lakeport Rail-fan Trip”

“Tracks to Lakeport” is this year’s NER convention theme, and this is the “Train to Lakeport” rail-fan trip. On Friday, October 18th, the Winnipesaukee Scenic Railroad departs the Meredith Station at 1:00 PM and travels south along beautiful Lake Winnipesaukee and Paugus Bay through Weirs Beach to Lakeport. This two-hour rail-fan trip is self-guided, so people need to arrive in Meredith ½ hour prior to departure for boarding.  You should arrive in Meredith by 12:30 PM for the 1:00 PM train departure.  The train will return to Meredith at 3:00 PM. There are many wonderful shops, restaurants, and tourist attractions in Meredith, including a relaxing walking path along the lakeshore.

Friday October 18 “Lake Winnipesaukee Cruise”

What would be a convention in Laconia and New Hampshire’s Lakes Region without a cruise on the M/S Mount Washington on Lake Winnipesaukee!  On Friday October 18th, this cruise departs from the Weirs Beach Station at 10:00 AM and travels across Lake Winnipesaukee to Wolfeboro. This particular cruise offers two personal options. You can choose to remain on-board and return to Weirs Beach at 12:30 PM or you can get off in Wolfeboro at 11:15AM, visit for 2.5 hours, and return to Weirs Beach on the last (1:45PM) cruise back (unscheduled). This will return to Weirs Beach at 3:00PM. Note: You must park in the long-term parking lot if planning on visiting Wolfeboro Friday October 18.  There are many wonderful shops, restaurants, and tourist attractions in Wolfeboro, which happens to be the oldest summer resort in New Hampshire. This is also self- guided, as Weirs Beach is only a few minutes by car from the Margate Hotel. You should plan on arriving ½ hr before departure for boarding.

Friday October 18 “CSRR Rail-fan Trip”

For the rail-fans looking to venture over to North Conway, the Conway Scenic Railroad is offering an exclusive, private run on the Budd Car “Millie” (RDC-1 #23).  The trip will depart the North Conway Depot at 10:30 AM to Conway, Redstone, and Glen with a lunch stop (cost of lunch not included in the fare) at the Red Parka Steakhouse & Pub which is offering this lunch special for $14.95 + tax and gratuity.  Given the traffic at this time of year, we strongly urge you to leave the hotel early (i.e. 7:30-8AM) and plan on visiting some of the local layouts before boarding should you get to the station early.  There will be a narrator on board and there will be photo run-by opportunities along the way, however, their location will only be given to those on board that day.  The train will return to North Conway Depot at or before 3:30PM.  The area near the station has a wide variety of shopping opportunities for those who want to come along but not ride the train.  There will also be an opportunity to tour the North Conway Depot facilities to examine the locomotives, cars, equipment, and roundhouse.  The Conway Model Railroad Club, located in the freight house, may also be open.   This is a self-guided trip and is located about an hour from the Margate.  It is suggested that attendees depart the hotel by 9AM to allow enough time for travel and check-in.  You should be able to make it back to the hotel between 4:30PM and 5PM. Note:

The deadline for this trip has been extended!  Sign up NOW!!!

Saturday October 19 “WSRR Fall Foliage Special”

On Saturday, October 19th, the Winnipesaukee Scenic Railroad “Fall Foliage Special” departs the Meredith Station at 11:00 AM and travels north, passing by Lakes Waukewan and Winona. The train climbs up and over Ashland Summit passing by the Ashland Railroad Station and over the Ashland high trestle. From the trestle the view of Ashland is splendid. The train makes its way through the Bonnie Brae Deer Farm and the Glove Hollow Tree Farm, where the owners may board the train to explain their alternative farming methods. About 12:20, the train arrives at the Common Man Inn in Plymouth where the passengers get off the train for a hot buffet luncheon (lunch included in the price!). After lunch the train returns to Meredith making a stop at the restored Ashland Railroad Station. For your convenience we have arranged bus transportation between the Margate (~10AM departure) and Meredith (~4 PM return). The train arrives in Meredith around 3:30 PM.

Each passenger will receive a special souvenir booklet describing the journey and points of interest along the way.

NOTE: A second bus has been added--plenty of room for more passengers!

Sunday October 20 “Railroad Speeder Run”

1958 Fairmont Track Motor Car

Owned by Sandown Historical Society

Sandown, NH

This run is an undertaking by the Sandown Historical Society as a fund raiser to continue the restoration work on their motor car and to fund the on-going work at the Sandown Depot.  They will be using many different cars from an array of railroads, styles and sizes. Some cars are open cars and others have different styles of enclosures. A typical motor car seats three passengers in addition to the operator.

There will be approximately twenty seats available for this run that will take three hours to cover the eight miles of track from Fernald to Wakefield, stop for lunch at the Miss Wakefield Dinner (lunch on you) and return to Fernald. The suggested donation for this trip is $20 per person, paid when you get to Fernald. Also, a waiver form will be required to be signed prior to departure.

This trip will only run if it is NOT raining.

The eight miles of track traverses wooded areas and wet lands that will offer good views of the October foliage without any infringement from “civilization” getting in the way.

Come along with us on this relaxing trip, listen to the two stroke engines going “put-put” and feel each rail joint jolt the car at 39 foot intervals. This is truly grass roots railroading at 12” to the foot.

This trip leaves from Fernald Crossing in Wolfeboro, NH at 11AM. Participants need to be there by 10:30AM.  We strongly recommend leaving 1 hour travel time from the hotel.  The trip should be concluded between 2PM and 3PM, depending on the length of time at the lunch stop.  NOTE: The Wakefield Historical Commission’s 1909 B&M layout will be open 9-4 so you can visit on the way there or the way back to the hotel!

Tickets for this event will be at the registration desk and you will be given priority based on your convention registration number.  You will need a ticket in order to participate because seats are limited.  The total number of seats available will be known closer to the convention based on the number of speeders that are running and available.
